This is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I listen to it. But this song is unique because as I was listening to it, I started to see in my head the characters Clary and Jace from The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare.
If you’ve read the books, read on for my thoughts on why this song reminds me of Clary and Jace.
If you haven’t read the books, BEWARE – SPOILERS AHEAD for books 1-3
Here are some of my favorite lines from the song and why they remind me of Clary and Jace’s relationship. (By the way, it’s been a while since I read these books so correct me if I get any of the facts wrong)
Stay with me, baby stay with me,
Tonight don’t leave me alone.
This reminds me of Jace asking to stay with Clary at the end of City of Glass.
I can see you there with the city lights,
Fourteenth floor, pale blue eyes.
I imagine Jace looking at Clary in New York City where the series is set.
Well, I’m not sure what this is gonna be,
But with my eyes closed all I see
Is the skyline, through the window,
The moon above you and the streets below.
When their relationship gets “complicated,” I can just see Jace remembering their kiss in the greenhouse on the rooftop from the first book and being confused about what their relationship is supposed to be now that they’re related.
Separate rooms and broken hearts,
But I won’t be the one to let you go.
Another reminder of their forbidden love and how Jace wants to love Clary anyway.
If it’s something that you want,
Darling you don’t have to run,
You don’t have to go …
This reminds me of Jace wanting a relationship with Clary even though they shouldn’t. It’s so sad how he asks her and at first she says no, but then changes her mind just in time for him to decide that they shouldn’t be together after all. Man, how I love sad stories.
I hope you like this song! It’s one of my new favorites.
