Twilight Playlist Countdown to Breaking Dawn Week 2

Welcome!  I’m so excited to re-read the Twilight Series to get ready for the Breaking Dawn: Part 1 movie release.  I decided to add something new to my re-reading experience.  I got The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide this year and I really wanted to listen to the playlists that were in there while I was reading the books, so I thought “Why not make an event out of it?”  And here were are.  Plus you can read along with me, if you like.  This week I am reading:

I’ve also made a bookmark for you to download that has a reading schedule on it so you can finish all four books before the movie comes out on November 18.

New Moon has two playlists in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide.  Today I’ll post the first playlist and tomorrow I’ll post the “alternate” playlist.  Why are there two?  I don’t know.  She doesn’t say in the guide.  Enjoy the music and check back tomorrow for even more music!

Twilight Playlist Countdown to Breaking Dawn Week 1 Wrap-up

Week 1 was great!  I read Twilight again and watched the movie.  Here are my spoilery thoughts on the following:

The Book: The book is sweet. It carefully takes you on the journey of discovering first love.  Their love is obsessive, but I think that’s how most people feel when they fall in love the first time.  Their love is bitter-sweet, too.  I saw a lot of references to Edward being sad and conflicted.   I was surprised at how light-hearted the book was while I was re-reading it.   It made for a nice contrast to the sudden shift into horror at the end. When Edward finds Bella in the dance studio, it’s utterly heart-breaking.

And man do they argue a lot.  They’re like a little married couple already!  It’s endearing how they have extremely different ideas on what’s best.  A lot of their arguments stem from being jealous of each other.  Edward is jealous of her mortality and Bella is jealous of his immortality. I liked the foreshadowing of Bella wanting to be alone with him on a beach. He he.

One thing that fascinates me is how Edward’s actions through the first half of the book could be interpreted as either a creepy stalker or of someone in love.  It emphasizes the fact that he hasn’t made up his mind yet if he’s going to give into his lust or hold out for true love.  He goes into her room at night without her knowing.  He follows her around in his car.  Bella is not creeped out by this behavior, but as I was reading it I couldn’t help think that maybe he didn’t always have the best of intentions like she thinks he does.  Edward has a bad boy streak, especially when it comes to his driving.  He’s the boy in high school you wanted to date but knew you shouldn’t.  If only you could have been the girl to straighten him out :)

My favorite line from Edward is him saying, “You have saved me.”  It reminds me a lot of what Darth Vader says to Luke in Star Wars.  Maybe it’s more important to save someone spiritually and Bella doesn’t realize that.  She needs to have a chat with Luke.

The Movie:  Is it just me or did the movie skip over why they fell in love?  Edward is talking about wanting to kill her and then *Urch*  ”I don’t know how long I’ve waited for you.” Um.  What?  When did they fall in love?  I like the dance studio scene in the movie because they are explicit about explaining things that are only implied in the book.  It’s very clear in the movie that Edward might kill her and what choice he is making.  Bella never thinks that he would kill her so it doesn’t come across like that in the book.  The movie is definitely more dramatic than the book. Maybe over-dramatic.  But I still love it!  And Robert Pattinson is nice to look at :) I love Edward’s line of the “vile repulsive things they were thinking.”  It wasn’t in the book, but it should have been.

Also, if you haven’t watched the audio commentary for the movie, DO IT NOW.  It’s hilarious.  Robert makes fun of himself THE WHOLE TIME and you can’t help but laugh through the whole thing.

The Playlist: I liked all the songs except for “Dreaming” by OMD.  It was so cheesy (especially in the context of the book which involves Bella staring at Edward’s abs) that it made me cringe.  My favorite song was “Why Does it Always Rain on Me?” by Travis.  I think it really brings out the sarcasm of the book.  The songs are mostly light-hearted and sweet.  Maybe the playlist helped change the mood that I read Twilight in.  I can’t tell if I always thought Twilight was sweet and light-hearted.

The Soundtrack: The Twilight soundtrack sold like hotcakes and even though I was a Twilight fan, I didn’t buy it at first.  None of the songs interested me.  Then I saw the movie.  I loved all the songs and had to have them.  A good soundtrack reminds you of the movie.  I can remember where all the songs go in the movie and listening to the soundtrack feels like watching the movie again and again.

Husband’s thoughts: You read that right.  Not only did my awesome husband read the book, he’s watched the movie with me.  Here’s what he had to say:

I really think it’s a good story. Edward falls in love with someone that is the hardest for him to have. I liked the blend of the natural and the supernatural.  Edward is a gentleman.  He’s courageous because he’s able to control his instinct to kill her.  Edward is willing to do anything for her and that’s a good example of what love is.  He can’t even kiss her without it being hard.  Edward is somewhat of a girl’s fantasy, but I think there could be guys like him out there. Most guys don’t like love stories because it’s feminine, I guess. Twilight is a love story, but it’s not a cheesy romance – there’s drama and action in it, too.  The book is easy to read and I liked that.  I was wondering how people read these books so fast.

I wish they had a different actress for Bella.  Edward’s makeup looks weird.  I know he’s supposed to be white, but they could have done a better job.  The running special effects in this movie look totally fake.  You can tell they’re on a line moving them.  I don’t know that I like Twilight, but I don’t dislike it.  The fight scene at the end was cool.

Flashback Friday: Halloween Costumes

Flashback Friday is where I post some writing of my life as a younger me.  I have a special Halloween Edition this week of all my Halloween costumes through the years.  Hope you enjoy!

2 years old

I’m 2 1/2 years old in my first Halloween costume as an adorable witch. I love the green paint splotches on my face.  And did I go trick-or-treating with an Easter basket?

6 years old

There isn’t another picture of my Halloween costumes until I’m six years old.  This year, my sister got to be the splotchy green-faced witch and I got to be a pumpkin.  My mom made our costumes.

7 years old

You guys, I was convinced that all my Halloween costumes growing up were horrible, but look how cute I am as a clown!!  My sister, Andrea, makes an adorable Princess.  My talented mom made both of these costumes as well.

8 years old

I think this is where my costumes start to got downhill.  I remember every year panicking at the last minute to get a costume together. I mean, I’m cute as an Indian but why those shoes?  And the weird sweater?  My costume seems to be made of two bandanas and a feather.  Andrea is the cute Princess again and my youngest sister, Kristen, is the pumpkin.  The other girl is my neighbor, Nicole.

9 years old

My sister has the cutest blond curls ever.  And look what an adorable cow she makes!  I think this is one of the only years that I had a store-bought costume.  My, what lots of red lipstick you have, Snow White.

10 years old

Hmm, this Indian costume looks familiar, but it’s been upgraded with a vest.  I like the face paint.  Kristen, the Princess.

When I was 12, I dressed up as Princess Leia (I don’t have a picture of it).  It was 2 days before Halloween and we were desperately trying to get a decent Princess Leia costume together.  We watched The Empire Strikes Back and decided to copy how Leia looks on the planet Hoth by braiding my hair and pinning it to the back of my head while I wore all white, including a heavy, white jacket.

Everyone thought I was a skiier.

But I’ll tell you what, I was warm that year with my winter coat on.  I could have gone trick-or-treating ALL NIGHT while my friends’ toes were falling off.  Take that.

14 years old

My last Halloween costume was when I was 14 and on the verge of being too old to trick-or-treat.  I’m the phantom with no face.  The question I got asked the most was if I was a boy or a girl.  Andrea has an awesome costume of Wednesday from the Addams’ Family and Kristen is a cute witch.  Does that hat look familiar??

So there you have it.  Every picture of every Halloween costume I ever had. Looking back, I remember a general feeling of panic every year at Halloween trying to decide what to be at the last minute and then scrambling to get a costume ready in time.  I think that even if we had gone to the store when I finally decided what I wanted to be, there wouldn’t have been anything left.  My mom was worried that they were just cheap.  Maybe that’s true, but I blame me and my procrastination for all my bad Halloween costumes.

I’m feeling this strange need to go out and buy a real Princess Leia costume and heal some emotional scars :)  Too bad I don’t have long hair anymore.  And this is me vowing that I will not wait until the last minute to buy costumes for my kids! (well, starting next year.  I haven’t gotten their costumes yet this year.  PANIC.).  I want just once in my life to have a kick-butt costume that leaves everyone jealous and in awe that I have carefully planned out.  Nothing can stand in my way!  Not even procrastination!!

What have been some of your costumes through the years?

Happy Halloween!

The Short, Sweet, and Spoiler-Free Blurb:

Isabella Swan’s move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella’s life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

5 Stars

My sister was reading this book in high school and when she told me it was about vampires, I was seriously concerned that she had gone all goth on me. To make sure she wasn’t reading weird stuff, I decided to read it and to my surprise, I loved it. The part that I loved the most about this book is how Stephenie captures the feeling of what it’s like to fall in love for the first time. I didn’t fall in love with a vampire, but my first love felt exactly the same way it did for Bella. Bella is so relatable that it comes to the point where you fell like you ARE her and you are living this intensely romantic love story. And Bella is sarcastic.  The movies bring out the drama a lot, but the books are actually funny, sarcastic and sweet (okay, and a little bit cheesy:) The characters, especially Edward, are unpredictable like real people would be.  Stephenie’s blend of the every day and the supernatural is fascinating.  My favorite thing about fantasy is that it asks questions we never thought to ask.  To me Twilight asks the question, “What if you fell in love with someone you wanted to kill?”  The ending was completely surprising to me and not at all what I was expecting. I was completely floored.  The best stories always surprise me. The rest of the series is good, but Twilight will always be my favorite.

Content Rating: Medium, some violence and some kissing.

About Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer

Stephenie Meyer’s life changed dramatically on June 2, 2003. The stay-at-home mother of three young sons woke-up from a dream featuring seemingly real characters that she could not get out of her head. “Though I had a million things to do (i.e. making breakfast for hungry children, dressing and changing the diapers of said children, finding the swimsuits that no one ever puts away in the right place), I stayed in bed, thinking about the dream. Unwillingly, I eventually got up and did the immediate necessities, and then put everything that I possibly could on the back burner and sat down at the computer to write–something I hadn’t done in so long that I wondered why I was bothering.” Meyer invented the plot during the day through swim lessons and potty training, then writing it out late at night when the house was quiet. Three months later she finished her first novel, Twilight. Stephenie Meyer graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in English Literature. She lives in Arizona with her husband and sons.
